Star Wars: TIE Fighter Collector's Edition with Behind the Magic Module Review

Star Wars: TIE Fighter Collector's Edition with Behind the Magic Module

The credentials of this game are impressive. Among other awards, the was noted as Best Action Game of 1994 by PC Gamer, Best Game of 1994 by Strategy Plus, and Best Simulation Game 1994 by InterActive Gaming... and that was for the ORIGINAL game. This collector's edition makes the unique Imperial experience infinitely more rich by not only adding a number of new campaigns, but by adding significantly improved graphics and sound.
What makes this game so great? I can't do it justice in this short description, but everything that has ever truly made for good gameplay can be found here. The challenge is virtually perfect; if you play part of a level and fail, and you just KNOW that you can go back and do it if you try hard enough. This makes it all the more rewarding when you finally do conquer that challenge. The replay value is excellent... I've played the game through over and over again; it's like rereading a good book. And it does an incredible job of creating an unprecedented experience... you are a pilot in the Galactic Empire. Though usually portrayed as the Bad Guys, you'll see that the Empire is really about bringing peace and order to the galaxy... about crushing the anarchist Rebellion... and if you have to destroy a few planets to do that, so be it! The subplot of intrigue and betrayal make the game more compelling.
Again, I haven't done the game justice... you have to play it to believe it. If you don't have a really high-end computer but want a good game, this is the one for you. And if you're looking for a classic game with great shelf life, it's perfect for that purpose, too.
It's just a really great game.

AC/DC Live: Rock Band Track Pack Review

AC/DC Live: Rock Band Track Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
AC/DC Live: Track Pack has all the rock-edge you've wanted to play in a music game. The songs are fun to play, with accurate-enough charts and tunes that even if you didn't think you knew--most of which--you'll realize you've heard on your local rock station a dozen times before (which by no means is a bad thing). Obviously this will cater the most to fans of the band, and really, if you don't at least moderately like AC/DC I have no idea why you'd pick this up.
All of the songs are currently--and possibly *forever*--exclusive to this disc, so don't expect to find them in the DLC updates. According to an article I read online, AC/DC refuses to put out individual tracks (either in music games like Rock Band or Guitar Hero, nor individual mp3s found in services like iTunes) because they consider themselves a 'full-album band'... which is an unusual attitude to have, but I get it, I guess.
The only qualm I really have with this Track Pack is that, since it uses the Rock Band 1 system, you need to play through a Career-style menu in order to unlock each song. (Eg. You start off with Song 1 and can't advance until you beat it, which then unlocks Song 2 to play.. then Song 3.. and Song 4, etc.) Although, once you've completed all of the songs, they're yours to play in Quickplay, but don't expect to be able to create your own tracklist once you have unlocked them all--you'll need the Rock Band 2 functions for such things.
Luckily, the game comes with a one-time use transfer code--as mentioned in the description--to let you download the entire set as one giant file to your 360's harddrive for use with either Rock Band game in the series (and supposedly future Rock Band games as well, but we'll see about that), keep in mind that you'll need to connect to Xbox Live Marketplace to use the transfer code however.

Lego Racer 1 & 2 Review

Lego Racer 1 and 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a clean, fun, highly playable game. The storyline is a bit campy, but what do you expect from a Lego game? Even though it is clearly aimed at younger kids, my 15-year-old still enjoys playing against his younger siblings in two-player mode.
The graphics are clean, the audio is usually clear except that any character speaking is sort of the old Peanuts "adult" noise instead of being anything intelligible, but that allows them to create subtitles in whatever language you need without rerecording audio.
Controls are responsive, and the power-ups are creative and funny. It's fun just to watch the kids play against each other. The power-ups allow the little ones a chance to defeat their older brother.
High replayability.

Star Wars: Episode I Racer (Jewel Case) Review

Star Wars: Episode I Racer (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Believe it or not, I've been waiting to play this game ever since it came out in 1999, but my previous computer didn't have the required 3-D acceleration card. However, after I finally got it to work about half a week ago, I was completely blown away by the experience. For such low system requirements (compared to today' games), Star Wars Racer is an incredible thrill ride of a racing game.
Racer drops the player into one of the many podracers seen in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. All of the contestants in the movie are included, as well as their unique vehicles, and I think Lucasarts has even tossed in a few more, for more than 20 unique selections. Players race through 8 unique worlds and 21 tracks, culminating in the Boonta Classic race, as seen in the movie. Additionally, 4 other tracks can be opened up, for a total of 25. Along the way, as players win money from the races, they can upgrade their engines for better performance. Controls are simple, with the added twist of a power boost that can be charged up. And, whether or not you liked the kid in the movie, Jake Loyd returns to voice Anakin Skywalker (and Andy Selcombe returns as Watto) for true Star Wars authenticity.
Where Racer really blows the players away is its sense of speed. The graphics are detailed, varied, and amazing, and should run with no problems whatsoever. There are jungles, ice caves, volcanos, ruins, and industrial cities; the tracks go into zero gravity tunnels, underneath moving tanks, between propeller blades, through cities suspended in the sky, and more. The areas that must be seen to be believed, however, are the various canyon jumps. Ranging from simple leap frog jumps to rocketing across bottomless chasms, they'll literally press the player into the backs of their chairs the first time through, and wow them at the fact that the podracers don't shatter upon impact. I haven't played many of the current racing games, but for a game more than three years old, the graphics and feeling of speed are still nothing to be laughed at.
Racer, unfortunately, isn't a totally complete experience. The lack of the famous Star Wars music is noticible, and the podracers, though nice-sounding, don't have quite the punch they did in the movie. While all the tracks are unique, many of them feature areas that are similiar. You might go through a third of a track that's exactly the same as one of the previous ones you went through, before venturing into new territory, and then branching back into the same track. Fortunately, save for one, most of the tracks are different enough to justify being called "unique". And the game, while a great experience, is definitely too easy for the most part. With the exception of the last few tracks, most can be whizzed through within one or two tries. I didn't even have to learn how to break until after I completed the first seven tracks. Finally, while there's LAN, there's no other internet compatibility. How many of us have LAN at home?
Still, despite its shortcomings, Racer is an excellent game. The great graphics, sense of speed, and suicidal jumps make up for the game's other flaws. As one of the Lucasarts classic titles, it's now really cheap, and is worth the money even if you only play through it once. Great as in impulse buy or mini gift, especially for Star Wars and racing fans.
NOTE: WinXP users might need to check the Lucasarts website for a patch if they experience a white screen lockup at the start of the race.

Star Wars: X-Wing VS TIE Fighter with Balance of Power Review

Star Wars: X-Wing VS TIE Fighter with Balance of Power
Average Reviews:

I don't know what all the criticism is about. Personally I think this is a great game from Lucasarts. The various melees are innovative and challenging, especially at hardest skill level, and anyone who says ISDs are puny should try playing it on a more adult skill level. Also, VSDs, although lesser armored, are pretty powerful. I think all the capital ships balance out nicely. The one thing I can complain about is the lack of TIE Defender in the game or add-on. Speaking of which, I think that the add-on pack really provides an immersing challenge. The missions are difficult yet fun, and make you feel like you are really fighting for your life and beliefs. Also, the SSD is huge! It's my favourite ship, and looks so menacing. In short, I just cannot see what everyone finds so wrong. Another great Lucasarts game, and roll on more.
